The NFPA Fluid Power Challenge is a skills competition for 8th grade students, intended to expose students and teachers to engineering problem solving using fluid power technology. The Challenge is meant to complement the fluids section in many science and technology curricula and give students the hands-on experience of designing, building and demonstrating a fluid-power based mechanism to solve an assigned problem.
Interest in the Challenge has been overwhelming since its introduction in the 2007-2008 school year! The 2009 Challenge will take place in four different locations (two locations in Wisconsin)-bringing fluid power technology to more budding engineers at the middle school level. Space is again limited to 20 teams per site.

Our 2009 theme, From Here to There, seeks to open the box of human creativity and spark imaginative conversations about a just and sustainable tomorrow. How can we get from where we are right now (here) to where we want to be (there)? Key issues relating to food, water, energy, transportation, clean air -- to life on planet Earth -- will be covered throughout the conference. In the Beaming Bioneeers tradition, video of the plenary sessions from the 2009 Bioneers Conference will be featured, as will be live talks and discussion sessions that are designed to develop our local theme. Art and music will be interwoven throughout our two-day experience.
